Sports stadiums are major construction projects that often need to be completed under considerable time pressure and pose a variety of challenges. These include placing large amounts of concrete in city centers, the harmonization of design and safety standards and the construction of weatherproof grandstands, roofs and parking areas.
These specific challenges can be mastered effectively using the broad product portfolio of Master Builders Solutions, as has been demonstrated by projects throughout Europe – the Warsaw National Stadium for instance, the Aviva Stadium in Dublin and the San Mamés football stadium in Bilbao, northern Spain. These stadiums all offer seating for more than 50,000 spectators at sports and cultural events. The Allianz Stadium in Vienna also used concrete precast solutions from Master Builders Solutions: The tribune elements were produced with precast admixtures from Master Builders Solutions for a smooth and flawless surface. The stadium has been opened in summer 2016 and offers space for more than 28,000 visitors.
Fair-faced concrete for nine kilometers of grandstands
Work on the construction of the Allianz stadium in Vienna had started in February 2015. The new stadium was to be ready for the 2016/17 season. Concrete admixtures from Master Builders Solutions were used for the pre-fabricated concrete elements of the nine kilometers of grandstands. This project called for a self-compacting concrete with high segregation resistance. The Master Builders Solutions experts therefore optimized the concrete mix design with MasterGlenium ACE 430, an admixture developed specially for use in pre-fabricated concrete elements. It promotes the fine dispersion of the cement and is therefore suitable for the production of self-compacting concrete. This type of concrete is especially economical as it allows for faster construction, thus reducing time and energy as well as manpower needed. Deadlines can be met reliably and the construction progress becomes more predictable.
Appearance also was a key factor for the construction of the grandstands. The exposed concrete surfaces were to be free from air inclusions and pores and they had to show uniform coloring. These objectives were achieved thanks to the use of MasterFinish DF 370. During concrete mixing and placing, this product works as a “de-aerator”, preventing air bubbles on the surfaces and facilitating the production of pore-free fair-faced concrete.
Solution package from a single source
An important aspect in the construction of the San Mamés Stadium in Bilbao was to involve as few suppliers as possible in order to minimize the complexity of the project. Thus the Master Builders Solutions experts provided a complete solution package ranging from concrete admixtures to waterproofing products. In order to simplify construction work and ensure completion to schedule in August 2014 they also prepared a detailed manual for the use of the products. Concrete plasticizers from the MasterGlenium range ensured smooth and trouble-free concreting: It enables the precise adjustment of concrete workability and keeps it that way until installation on site. The bleachers were protected with a waterproofing solution from the MasterSeal range: The easy-to-apply membrane with high elasticity and good crack bridging properties prevents water ingress.
Concrete construction in all weather conditions
The Warsaw National Stadium construction had to adhere to a tight schedule as it was needed for the 2012 European Football Championships. No significant interruptions would have been possible and 220,000 square meters of concrete had to be placed at high and low temperatures alike. Thus Concrete admixtures were required to ensure homogeneous consistency in different weather conditions. The ideal solution was provided by a hyperplasticizer from the MasterGlenium range in combination with MasterPozzolith for high ambient temperatures. These products ensured optimum concrete quality in all weather conditions.
A stadium with a long history
Time was also of the essence during construction of the Aviva stadium in Dublin:
As the world’s oldest rugby stadium is located in a quiet residential district, the construction of the new stadium was to be completed as rapidly as possible without any adverse effects on local residents. Here, too, Master Builders Solutions concrete admixtures were used: The waterproof concrete for the northern stand was produced using a MasterPel admixture together with a MasterGlenium hyperplasticizer. This combination provides a surface with strong hydrophobic properties: Concrete pores are reduced and the remaining pores receive durable water-repellent properties.
More examples for the use of the broad Master Builders Solutions product portfolio in the construction of sports venues can be found for example in South Africa, Mexico, China and the US: Every new project benefits from the broad experience and the connectedness of the Master Builders Solutions experts in Europe and globally, simplifying the construction process and ensuring timely completion even of time-critical projects.Bildnachweis Adobestock Bild:#69540135 | Urheber: josetzu
